the 'reading by six' campaign is supported by Dr Max coltheart

Please note that supporters of the Reading By Six campaign are united to raise awareness about why it is important that children are given the best opportunity to learn to read early. All however have differing views and strategies, and so comments made may not necessarily reflect the 'general consensus'
Indeed, the very idea of this 'campaign' is to show that regardless of view points or preferences regarding the teaching of reading (writing and spelling) it is possible for us to unite for the sake of children across Australia. It is possible for us to have differing ideas and still work together. It is time to end the 'reading wars', for our children.

About Max Coltheart

I'm a cognitive scientist with interests mainly in cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuropsychiatry. I was born in 1939 at Frankston, near Melbourne, and grew up in Brisbane, Canberra and Bega before enrolling at the University of Sydney in 1957, where I did BA, MA and PhD degrees. I came to Macquarie's Psychology Department in 1987 after having had academic posts in Sydney (University of Sydney, 1965-1967), Melbourne (Monash University, 1967-1969), Canada (University of Waterloo, 1969-1972) and England (at the University of London, where I was Professor of Psychology at Birkbeck College 1975-1987, and at the University of Reading, where I was Reader in Psychology 1972-1975).

I became Scientific Director of MACCS at its inception in 2000 and held this post until 2009. I was awarded an ARC Federation Fellowship in 2002. In 2010, I was appointed Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Science at Macquarie University.

Learning to Read in Australia

with Max Coltheart and Margot Prior

There is need for a raising of awareness in parents and families in the community of the importance of preparing their children for success in reading, through pre-reading activities at home and in play, including introducing their children to letters and sounds in the pre-school stage.

In a 2007 Policy Paper by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, researchers discuss the skills required to learn to read and spell, and ways in which these skills can be imparted in school and at home.

Researchers Max Coltheart and Margot Prior suggest that learning to read is not easy, and a substantial number of children struggle to do it. Learning to write and spell is not easy, either, and some children lag behind their peers here, too.

Areas where children struggle:

  • There are children who are normal readers for their age but poor spellers. Children who have had difficulty in learning to read but have managed to catch up with their peers as far as reading is concerned often still exhibit poor writing and spelling.
  • Two necessary subskills in learning to read should both be included in reading instruction: phonics instruction (teaching children what the letter-sound rules are) and sight-word recognition (teaching children to recognise individual isolated words as wholes).
  • Some children have trouble in the first phase: they are having difficulties in mastering the use of letter-sound rules to sound out what’s on the printed page.
  • There are also other children whose difficulties are at the second phase: even if they have mastered the use of letter-sound rules to sound out what’s on the printed page, they struggle to move beyond this to build up a sight vocabulary of words which they can recognise instantly and automatically without needing to sound them out.
  • There is a solid body of scientific knowledge about how children learn to read, what they should be taught in the course of early reading instruction, different ways in which children find learning to read difficult, and effective methods for helping such children.

Coltheart and Prior say that reading and spelling are symbiotic and hence should be taught together. Indeed, teaching of writing/spelling is a particularly powerful way of imparting to children an understanding of the alphabetic principle.

The situation for the thousands of children in Australian schools who are struggling with literacy requirements every day, and whose future will be seriously compromised if they do not receive expert help, is especially serious. While up to 20 per cent of children and adolescents are said to emerge from their education experience in Australia with ‘very poor levels of literacy’ according to numerous surveys, around 10 per cent have intransigent reading difficulties which seriously limit their capacities for healthy adjustment in our society.

Consequences of poor literacy include low confidence and self esteem, social, emotional and behavioural problems, vulnerability to delinquency and crime, early drop out from education, and under or unemployment.

They say that evidence indicates that the Whole Language approach to the teaching of reading is currently the most widely used approach to the teaching of reading in Australian schools. On the basis of its literature review, the Australian Inquiry concluded that students who are having difficulty learning to read need to acquire the basic building blocks for reading, including:

  • letter knowledge (the names and sounds of the alphabet),
  • phonological awareness (explicit appreciation of the sounds of language and how words are composed of these sounds) and
  • a grasp of the alphabetic principle (the principle that the individual sounds of language can be represented by individual marks on the page – letters)

This survey’s findings included that the lack of knowledge of such concepts as phonemic awareness, phonics and the alphabetic principle, and that new teachers are graduating without sufficient specific strategies to improve literacy.

The Committee made several recommendations which they hope will improve the situation, including:

  • Teachers should provide systematic, direct and explicit phonics instruction so that children master the essential alphabetic code-breaking skills required for foundational reading proficiency;
  • The teaching of reading throughout schooling should be informed by comprehensive, diagnostic and developmentally appropriate assessments of every child;
  • The conditions for teacher registration of graduates from all primary and secondary teacher education programs should include a demonstrated command of personal literacy skills necessary for effective teaching of reading;
  • All schools should have a highly trained specialist literacy coordinator to support school staff in developing and monitoring children’s progress in individual literacy plans, especially for those children with reading difficulties;
  • Literacy teaching should continue throughout schooling (Kindergarten to Year 12); and specialist literacy teachers should be available in each school;
  • Teacher education and training should include more specific and evidence based training in the teaching of reading and include ongoing professional learning throughout the teaching career; and
  • A national program of literacy action should be set up to design, produce, and evaluate guidelines concerned with the effectiveness of teaching literacy, and to promote research into the best teaching practice.

The Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science's Professor Max Coltheart talks about what it takes to be a leading researcher.

Institute of Human Cognition and Brain Science

The Institute of Human Cognition and Brain Science brings together the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS) and the Macquarie University Special Education Centre (MUSEC).

MACCS is an internationally recognised research facility in cognitive science and cognitive neuropsychology, initially funded by the Australian Research Council.

Staff provide a supportive and interactive research environment for all research members, including students. The major thrust of MACCS research is to carry out studies of people with acquired or developmental disorders of one or other of these domains as a way of learning more about the normal processes of cognition.

The Centre conducts research and research training in cognitive science primarily in three general domains of cognition:

  • language
  • visual cognition program
  • belief formation program.

The Centre has a variety of laboratories including a high performance computational modelling laboratory and the KIT-Macquarie Brain Research Laboratory, which has the southern hemisphere’s only magnetoencephalography (MEG) system.

MUSEC conducts research and teaching in Special Education. It has a national and international reputation for the quality of its research, excellence in postgraduate teaching and its contribution to program development in the area of Special Education.

MUSEC staff include:

  • special educators
  • psychologists
  • teachers
  • therapists
  • researchers.

Complementary program development ensures that research findings are translated into practical applications for implementation by teachers who work with children with special needs in both regular and special schools.

Professor Coltheart is one of Australia’s most renowned and distinguished cognitive scientists. He was born in Frankston, near Melbourne. In 1957, he enrolled at the University of Sydney where he completed BA, MA and PhD degrees. Over the last 40 years, he has had a highly successful academic career – mainly in the areas of cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuropsychiatry – with an unparalleled range and volume of publications, achievements and honours.

Professor Coltheart held a number of academic posts at the University of Sydney and several overseas posts before being appointed to Macquarie University’s Department of Psychology in 1987. He was Head of that department from 1992 to 1997 and became Scientific Director at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science in 2000. In 2002 was awarded an ARC Federation Fellowship.

Professor Coltheart’s research into dyslexia, delusional beliefs and schizophrenia changed clinical practice in those fields. His work has also changed how children worldwide are now taught to read.

Over the course of his career, he supervised 53 PhD students to completion – all of whom have gone on to successful careers. He maintains active partnerships with a number of his former students – an indication of his collaborative and supportive style.

Professor Coltheart is Australia’s most highly-cited psychologist and the only active psychologist who is a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Science and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy. He was recognised with the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the Australian Psychological Society in 2003.

In 2007 he was awarded the Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. This year he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

It is with the greatest pleasure that we award Professor Coltheart the University’s highest honour today, the Doctor of Letters honoris causa, for his outstanding contributions to the University, academia and society as a whole.

Routes To Reading Success and Failure

Toward an Integrated Cognitive Psychology of Atypical Reading
Edited by: Nancy E. Jackson, Max Coltheart

Monographs cover picture
Publisher:Psychology Press
ISBN : 1841690112
Pub Date: 08 NOV 2001

This new book provides fresh and original perspectives on the nature of individual differences in word and nonword reading. It does so by connecting three literatures that have developed largely in isolation from one another: the literatures on acquired dyslexia, difficulties in learning to read, and precocious reading. Jackson, a developmental psychologist, reconsiders her own and other recent studies of the cognitive psychology of precocious reading and hyperlexia. Coltheart, a cognitive neuropsychologist, draws on his own and others' studies of adults with acquired dyslexias. These literatures and studies of both developmental dyslexia and "garden variety" poor reading in children are examined to show how careful attention to methodological and conceptual issues can highlight similarities and differences across these diverse groups of readers.
Central to the authors' analysis is their argument for a distinction between proximal and distal causes of atypical reading. Proximal causes are cognitive explanations are the level of an individual's current reading system. Distal causes, which are likely to be less consistent across groups, include biological mechanisms and reading experiences. The authors analyses of proximal causes of atypical reading are presented in the context of Coltheart's dual-route cascaded (DRC) model of word and nonword reading. Routes to Reading Success and Failure will be of interest to a broad range of readers concerned with reading and its difficulties in cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, child development, and education.
