reading by six- deslea Konza
Please note that supporters of the Reading By Six campaign are united to raise awareness about why it is important that children are given the best opportunity to learn to read early. All however have differing views and strategies, and so comments made may not necessarily reflect the 'general consensus'
Indeed, the very idea of this 'campaign' is to show that regardless of view points or preferences regarding the teaching of reading (writing and spelling) it is possible for us to unite for the sake of children across Australia. It is possible for us to have differing ideas and still work together. It is time to end the 'reading wars', for our children.

Dr Deslea Konza - Moving on from the Literacy Wars
The literacy wars around phonics and whole language approach to reading have galvanised educators, but what have they shown us about effective classroom practice? Deslea provides context for the literacy wars and talks about applying the evidence of an integrated approach to the classroom to achieve accelerated, sustained literacy improvement. The Big Five Key Skills for Learning to Read
During the last two decades, converging research on beginning reading instruction has led to a clearer understanding of the skills that lead to success with reading and writing and how children learn to read. The five key skills identified are phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge (phonics), fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
The Principals as Literacy Leaders project invited Deslea Konza to develop seven podcasts. The podcasts include the ‘Big Five’ skills for learning to read, an introduction to the teaching of reading and a podcast describing the vital role that oral language development plays in learning to read.
